Jeffco man allegedly tries to murder his roommate

Man shoots acquaintance multiple times

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a man being shot multiple times on Tuesday evening. The man had allegedly been targeted by his roommate.

The shooting happened around 9:45 p.m., Tuesday in an apartment in the 7300 block of South Alkire Street. The victim had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to a press release by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Police found the man alive within his apartment. Police quickly administered first aid and he was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He’s reportedly in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators identified 36-year-old Ryan Moore as the suspect. He was also the victim’s roommate.

Moore was arrested on charges of:

  • Attempted first-degree murder, after deliberation
  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder, extreme indifference
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Possession of a weapon by a previous offender

The sheriff’s office noted that addition charges are possible and the investigation is ongoing.

A friend of the victim showed up during the police investigation and alerted officers that Moore should be investigated, according to the arrest affidavit.

Moore returned to the apartment hours later covered in mud. He told police that he had overheard the gunfire and ran, according to the arrest affidavit. He also admitted to breaking into the victim’s room to steal money from his safe. He said he needed the money to escape. He was afraid the shooting would lead to his parole officer finding out he had been drinking alcohol.

After interviewing with detectives, Moore admitted to shooting the victim. He said he was acting on a perceived threat and purchased a handgun to kill his roommate. He planned on killing him for two days, investigators wrote in the affidavit.

Moore told detectives he got home from work, loaded the handgun and accidentally fired into the floor. He believed that startled the roommate into loading his own gun and hiding in the bathroom.

Moore fired the entire clip through the door and into the bathroom, hitting the victim multiple times.

He admitted to being under the influence of methamphetamines and claimed someone had “put a spell on him,” according to the affidavit.
