Broncos at Bears grades: Denver rallies for first win of season

The Denver Broncos rally from 21 points down to grab their first victory of the season.

Here are grades for Sunday’s 31-28 win:

Offense

The Broncos offense came alive in the second half for the first time this season. Russell Wilson led two touchdown drives to keep the Broncos in the game. Wilson threw three touchdowns while Jaleel McLaughlin made the most of his touches with 72 yards on seven carries. It was one of Wilson’s best games since joining Denver.

The unit struggled most of the first half after scoring on their opening drive.

Grade: B

Defense

The unit made plays when they needed it. Jonathon Cooper’s scoop-and-score tied the game at 28. The Bears were driving for the winning field goal before the Broncos stopped them on 4th-and-1 to give the ball back to the offense. Kareem Jackson picked off quarterback Justin Fields to seal the game.

There were plenty of struggles early. Fields, who threw for 99 yards in last week’s loss to the Chiefs, had 335 yards with four touchdowns. Fields didn’t throw a non-Hail Mary incompletion until late in the third quarter. Missing tackles continued to be a problem.

Grade: C-

Special teams

Wil Lutz drilled the game-winning 51-yard field goal with under two minutes left. He also hit all his extra points.

Marvin Mims Jr. fumbled a kickoff return which set the Broncos back inside their own five-yard line. It was after the Bears’ first touchdown to give Chicago plenty of momentum. Mims had a 28-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.

Grade: B

Coaching

Sean Payton got his first win with Denver and did a good job keeping the Broncos engaged in the game. There were still some bad penalties and trouble getting out of the huddle. Vance Joseph’s defense continues to be suspect. They were gashed most of the game.

Grade: C
