Broncos add to depth at safety by activating P.J. Locke off injured reserve to face Jets
The Broncos finally have some solid depth at safety.
For Sunday’s game against the New York Jets at Empower Field at Mile High, the Broncos not only will have back defensive leader Justin Simmons from an injury, they activated P.J. Locke on Saturday off injured reserve.
Locke suffered a toe injury Aug. 15 in training camp and was placed on injured reserve prior to the Sept. 10 opener against Las Vegas. He missed the required four games, and was designated Wednesday for return from injured reserve.
Locke was a full participant in practice all week, clearing the way for him to have a reserve role against the Jets. He took the roster spot that came open when outside linebacker Randy Gregory was traded Friday to the San Francisco 49ers.
Simmons returns Sunday after missing the past two games due to a hip injury. The Broncos also lost in the opener safety Caden Sterns for the season with a knee injury and they were without starter Kareem Jackson on Sept. 17 against Washington for the remainder of the game after he was ejected late in the first half following a penalized hit.
With the Broncos thin at safety, second-year man Delarrin Turner-Yell got his first NFL regular-season snaps from scrimmage against the Commanders. Then with Simmons out, he got the first two starts of his career over the past two games.
