Train derailment in Colorado Springs update: Nearby roads reopened, cleanup continues

Trail derailment near jail

All roadways have been reopened in downtown Colorado Springs following a train derailment near the El Paso County jail Monday evening, according to police.

Officers were dispatched to the 2900 Block of East Las Vegas around 6:30 p.m. after reports of a possible train derailment, according to officials. Police responded to the scene and were able to confirm the derailment.

Colorado Springs police provided traffic control and support while railroad officials made repairs as well as move the cargo, the release said.

The train appeared to be carrying heavy military equipment, according to Gazette news partner KKTV.

As of 11:10 p.m. Monday, East Las Vegas Street was reopened in all directions. Officials said repairs are anticipated to last several days.

“Heavy roadside activity in the area for the next 72 hours is anticipated,” a CSPD lieutenant wrote in an online blotter entry.
