Denver Nuggets deliver good time to fans at open practice

The Denver Nuggets welcomed fans back to Ball Arena with an open practice Saturday.

Fans who took advantage of the free tickets occupied most of the lower bowl with more scattered throughout the upper sections.

Here are the highlights from the roughly hour-long exhibition.

– The festivities ended with some light rookie hazing. Hunter Tyson and Julian Strawther were handed microphones and forced to sing “Oops! … I Did It Again,” a Britney Spears classic, while Jalen Pickett and a teammate performed “Let It Go,” from the Disney musical “Frozen.” Last season, Christian Braun had to carry a Frozen-themed children’s backpack throughout the course of the season.

– Strawther’s vocal performance left a little bit to be desired, but he continued to deliver on the court. After scoring 20 and 16 points in Denver’s first two preseason games, Strawther was one of the best players during a brief scrimmage. None of the starters or established veterans took part, allowing plenty of room for the young players to take center stage. The highlight of Strawther’s night was a wild 3-point make that would’ve been a four-point play in any other setting.

– Not to be outdone, Peyton Watson put on an absolute show late in the scrimmage. The second-year wing deftly dribbled through a crowd in the back court, drawing a foul before he reached half court. The whistle didn’t stop Watson. He continued down the court and finished the sequence with a windmill dunk. The fans showed their appreciation with one of the louder roars of the afternoon.

– Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray took breaks from the drills prior to the exhibition for impromptu trips up the stairs in different sections of the 100 level to give out a bunch of high-fives to the fortunate fans seated near the aisles.

– An open practice seemed a lot like an All-Star Game when it came to showcasing what makes Nikola Jokic special. The Finals Most Valuable Player didn’t play in the scrimmage, but he did give the fans something to cheer about during some 5-on-0 drills, finishing one sequence with a light dunk. The crowd roared, and Jokic jogged back down court with a big smile across his face. Since he didn’t play in the scrimmage, Jokic and Aaron Gordon teamed up to coach one team, while Jamal Murray and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope coached the other.

– After the scrimmage, the Nuggets unveiled the afternoon’s special guest, the Larry O’Brien trophy. The team gathered for a team photo and Caldwell-Pope expressed his desire to win another title this season. Braun used the trophy’s shiny exterior to monitor the growth of his beard before making his way off the court.

– If the open practice was any indication, Michael Porter Jr. is closer to returning to action than Braun. Porter participated in most of the drills before resting with the rest of the starters during the scrimmage. Braun didn’t do any of the drills. Nuggets coach Michael Malone was not in attendance after his father’s death earlier in the week.
