Boulder County man wanted on charges animal cruelty

28-year-old George Bernard Benyard is wanted for animal cruelty

Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies continue to search for a man that is wanted for allegedly killing and hiding his dog’s remains last month.

Detectives heard that a man — later identified as 28-year-old George Bernard Benyard — allegedly told people that his home was a “murder scene,” and showed them pictures of a bloody bathroom. He allegedly said he had murdered someone and needed help hiding the body, according to a press release by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office was able to obtain a search warrant and Boulder County SWAT entered the home in the 10800 block of Empire Road in unincorporated Boulder County on Sept. 18. Benyard and his wife were brought in for questioning, according to the release.

Investigators found the body of an adult pit bull under a bush outside of the home. A necropsy showed that the dog had been killed by traumatic injuries, not an accident or other animal, according to the release.

Investigations showed the dog belonged to Benyard — though he denied to investigators knowing about it. The blood in the bathroom was later found to not be human. He also had three other dogs on the property. All three were taken into protective custody by the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Benyard on Oct. 5. He is wanted on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and tampering with physical evidence — both class six felonies.

Benyard’s whereabouts are currently unknown.
