Another Colorado ski area announces opening day for 2023-24 season
Another Colorado ski area is kicking off its season.
Following Arapahoe Basin’s wintry celebration Sunday, Keystone Resort has announced it is opening Wednesday.
A news release Monday thanked “more than a foot of new snow and the return to cold temperatures for snowmaking over the weekend.” The result will be two miles of skiing and riding on the Schoolmarm and Silver Spoon trails, starting with first chair at 9 a.m.

Also Wednesday Keystone will make a hike-to terrain park available on Spring Dipper, and beginners can start at a learning area atop the River Run Gondola. Early season terrain is reached via the the gondola off Montezuma Express.
Monday’s news release promised free donuts and coffee for early arrivals along with “DJ experiences” that “will keep the party going throughout the day.” Starting Wednesday, the resort will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Keystone’s Vice President and General Manager Chris Sorensen welcomed “what will be a really special year for us.” The new Bergman Express “will be a gamechanger,” he said — a high-speed, six-seat ride that will reach the high-alpine Bergman and Erickson bowls. Those were previously accessed by hike or snowcat.
Bergman Express is poised to debut later in the season. For now, Keystone is focused on expanding early-season terrain; operators aim to open the Mountain House base area around mid-November.
As of Monday afternoon, enthusiasts kept watch for other announcements following Mother Nature’s weekend bounty.
After nearly a foot of snow over the weekend, Loveland Ski Area, another typical early-season opener, said Monday it was looking to turn lifts in the next week or two. The ski area opened Nov. 3 last year.
Winter Park reported 15 inches of snow by Monday morning. In a social media post that morning, the resort told fans it would open “ASAP.” Last year’s Oct. 31 opening was celebrated as the resort’s earliest on record.
With high-powered, state-of-the-art snowmaking infrastructure in recent years, Vail Resorts has positioned Keystone as a contender to kick off Colorado’s season in October.
The company previously scheduled opening days for Breckenridge and Vail (Nov. 10) along with Beaver Creek and Crested Butte (Nov. 22).
Copper Mountain is scheduled to open Nov. 13, followed by Steamboat on Nov. 22 and Aspen Snowmass on Nov. 23, among several other resorts with plans ahead of Thanksgiving.
