Colorado Jewish communities come together for Clean Speech campaign

Spreading positivity and awareness amongst the community

Since Hamas’ first attack on Israel on Oct. 7, the news has been flooded with reports of tragedy.

More than 1,400 people — mostly civilians killed during the Hamas incursion — have died in Israel. Over 200 Israelis and foreigners were captured during the initial attacks, becoming prisoners of Hamas.

As of Sunday, more than 8,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Health Ministry run by Hamas.

Jewish communities in the United States are currently facing a battle of morality, negativity and tragedy, constantly pressed with the stress and trauma surrounding the war, according to advocates.

More than 70 Jewish communities have banded together to implement a “Clean Speech” campaign beginning WednesdayNov. 1 and lasting the entire month. The campaign of positive-enforcing efforts looks to “strengthen unity and focus” of Colorado Jews’ “individual and collective abilities to value and honor each other,” according to a press release from Clean Speech Colorado.

Led by Rabbi Raphael Leban, managing director of the Jewish Experience in Denver, the Clean Speech month will include daily 2-3 minute educational videos on the theme of Words of Greatness and Honor, everyday insights and tips on how to speak with dignity, honor and respect to each other.

Along with the daily videos, Clean Speech Colorado will travel around Denver every day in the “Clean Speech Cruiser” bus. The decorated bus will visit organizations and schools to honor and highlight “champions” throughout the Jewish community.

“Our campaign seeks to ensure everyone in our community knows their own precious value and infinite worth — that they are special and filled with greatness — that they are worthy of respect, self-respect — as well as the respect of others. When we speak to one another, the words we exchange should reflect that greatness,” Leban said in the press release.

The campaign was initially started by Leban in 2019 but has grown in popularity over the years. Over 200 organizations have participated in past campaigns. A handful of major cities — along with the state of Colorado — will participate in November’s.

Jewish organizations in New York City, Cincinnati, Ottawa and Santa Barbara will also run the Clean Speech campaign in November.

“Instead of watching graphic, violent videos of terrorists bent on destruction and death, our campaign offers a very different kind of video — one that gives a positive message and tools for changing the way we speak to one another,” Leban said.
