Bridge resurfacing on westbound I-270 will snarl traffic this weekend

The Colorado Department of Transportation advises that ongoing bridge resurfacing on I-270 between York Street and Vasquez Boulevard will snarl westbound traffic this weekend. Freight with loads wider than 12 feet will be restricted through the work zone.

Single lane closures are scheduled for the following times:

  • 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4
  • 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5

Delays of 30 to 60 minutes should be expected on westbound I-270 on Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

CDOT suggests that if you are planning to attend one of the big sporting events in Denver during the day or evening on Saturday, Nov. 4, you should plan for additional travel time or take an alternate route.

More time is needed to wrap up work this weekend because the bridges over 60th Avenue and Brighton Boulevard are longer than the previous bridges, requiring more time to complete. More time is also needed for concrete to cure due to colder weather, according to a CDOT release.

The project involves resurfacing six of the eight bridges within a two-mile stretch of I-270 to replace the old asphalt with reinforced concrete, making for a more durable driving surface.

CDOT officials said the bridges need to be resurfaced now to prevent lengthy and unexpected lane closures in the future because of emergency pavement repairs.

The project will greatly improve the driving surface and safety of these bridge decks until the bridge structures can be completely replaced in the future as part of the I-270 Corridor Improvements Project, according to CDOT.

Crews completed resurfacing bridges on the eastbound side and are focused on wrapping up westbound work before the brunt of winter weather.
