When it comes to blasting down a trail on a mountain bike, there are plenty of hazards to watch out for. One rider learned that the hard way when a buck with a large rack leapt in front of him on the trail.

In video footage that has since gone viral, the male rider is seen traveling down a forested trail at a high rate of speed, when a buck on the side of the trail jumps in front of his line.

According to reporting at the time from Nature is Metal, the rider “suffered heavy losses in the “vital fluid” department, and upon medical examination it was discovered that one of the deer’s antler points narrowly missed his right lung.”

While riding at high speeds or on trail with limited visibility, it’s especially important to look ahead and for movement around the trail, not just at what’s immediately in front of the tire. Obviously, freak accidents of this nature can happen, but keeping a high level of awareness can be a good means of prevention. Controlling speed also allows for more time to react.
