Nuggets vs. Warriors: 3 takeaways from Denver’s 108-105 win
The Denver Nuggets improved to 6-0 at home with Wednesday’s 108-105 win over the Golden State Warriors.
Here are three takeaways from Ball Arena:
1. Few players on the Nuggets deserve the next couple of days off as much as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Denver’s starting two guard spent most of his 35 minutes chasing Warriors star Stephen Curry all over the court. Curry still managed to finish with 23 points, but five of those came from the foul line, as he finished 6 of 17 from the field. Even after all that work, Caldwell-Pope had enough left in the tank to sink two crucial free throws in the final minute. The Nuggets probably don’t win this one without KCP’s contributions on both ends. The veteran guard was once again Denver’s defensive player of the game.
2. Nikola Jokic’s shot chart ran hot and cold. Denver’s star center missed his first five 3s in the first half before making his sixth attempt. He finished 1 of 8 from deep. Kevon Looney’s physicality appeared to frustrate Jokic early, but with the 3-point shot not falling, Denver’s NBA Finals Most Valuable Player went back to work inside. Jokic made 13 of his 17 shots inside the arc to finish with a game-high 35 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block. Jokic showed some fatigue in the final minutes with an atypical turnover and two missed free throws, but he did enough in the first 35 minutes of his playing time to help the Nuggets get a win.
3. The Nuggets being without Jamal Murray and the Warriors missing Draymond Green and Gary Payton II make it tough to put too much stock in the result of this season’s first meeting between the NBA’s last two champions. Reggie Jackson filled Murray’s spot, while Dario Saric started in Green’s typical spot. Rookie Brandin Podziemski also handled a larger load in Payton’s absence.
