Judge sentences man to decades in prison for killing young father during carjacking

The victim, Carlos Albarracin, had recently moved to the U.S. from Colombia in search of a better life

An Arapahoe County judge on Tuesday sentenced a man to 85 years in prison for his role in a series of crimes in 2021 that left a man dead in Aurora.

Last month, Andrew Jacobs pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, and three violent crime sentence enhancers, according to court documents. Sixty other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Jacobs was given a 48-year sentence for the second-degree murder charge and 18 years for one robbery charge and 19 for the other. That brings the total to 85 years. He was given credit for the 735 days he’s already spent in jail.

According to Aurora police, Jacobs shot and killed Carlos Albarracin while he was sitting in his pickup truck at the Florida Station Apartments in Aurora on Nov. 10, 2021. Albarracin’s then 6-year-old son was also in the truck at the time, but was able to get out unharmed before Jacobs left in it.

The family had moved to the United States from Colombia just a few months prior to the shooting.

“We are forever changed and saddened by the loss of our beloved Carlos Julio. He came to this country to provide a better life and future for his family, and that future was robbed from us by Andrew Jacobs,” his family said in a statement provided by a family friend.

“After two years, we still feel the pain of the day of the murder. Emmanuel, now 8-years old, will never again have the love, support, and protection of his father. We also feel sorry for the family of Andrew Jacobs, especially his children, who will also feel his absence because of his actions.”

“This is one of the most egregious crime sprees my team has prosecuted,” District Attorney John Kellner said. “I can’t imagine the trauma this young child now lives with after witnessing his father’s killing. The decision to plead this case was made to spare this child the grief of having to testify in court.” (Courtesy of the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office)
