Plea deal, sentencing possible for one of two deputies in Christian Glass shooting

One of two Clear Creek County Sheriff’s deputies charged over his role in the shooting death of Christian Glass is expected to enter a plea and be sentenced Thursday.

Kyle Gould was the supervisor on duty the night of June 11, 2022 when Glass, 22, was shot during an intense night-time standoff on a mountain road near Silverplume.

It was Gould who gave the order to breach the window of Glass’ car, but he was not present when the 22-year-old was shot.

Former Deputy Andy Buen, who shot Glass through the window of his car, still faces trial in the case. Both officers were fired after the indictment last Nov. 23.

Buen faces several charges, including second-degree murder, reckless endangerment and official misconduct. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 20.

Part of the fallout from Glass’ death was the resignation of former Clear Creek County Sheriff Rick Albers, who left the force last may “with mixed emotions” after 43 years of service. The department has been operating under the direction of Undersheriff John Stein.

Last month, the Clear Creek County Commissioners quietly appointed a federal law enforcement officer as Clear Creek County’s new sheriff for the next year.

Matt Harris, a 27-year veteran of federal law enforcement, was selected to take the helm starting in January. The former Littleton resident told The Denver Gazette that he acquired a home in Clear Creek County before Nov. 3.

If he decides that he and the community are a good fit, he said he would formally run for the position next November. It is a requirement that a candidate must be a resident of Clear Creek County for at least one year before running for office.

Harris was a unanimous choice by the commissioners after a four-candidate interview process was completed on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25.

Undersheriff Stein and Lt. Seth Marquardt, who are currently on staff, were considered for the job.

In his interview, Stein brought up the fact that he took over the department as undersheriff while it was in turmoil. He promised to make positive changes within the community.

“I have brought the department from a low point to a higher level,” he said.

Bruce Brown, the former 5th Judicial District Attorney, rounded out the four interview candidates.

Harris was appointed after public comment on the morning of Oct. 25.

He is currently an assistant inspector general for investigation with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, he told the three-person panel, and has also worked with the U.S. Marshals Service in Salt Lake City, where he said that he oversaw three officer involved shootings.

“You either walk away from those challenges or you face them head on,” he said during his hour-long public interview.

Harris addressed the Glass killing, noting that there is work to be done to bridge new relationships with the community.

“Traditional law enforcement training is based upon combat and protecting yourself in battle. A warrior. But that’s not what we’re dealing with in this community. We have to build trust. We can’t have officers who only have that battle mindset.”

During public comment the morning following his formal interview, a Clear Creek County resident named Graham Knight asked the question that was on everyone’s minds.

““What is this guy doing applying for sheriff of Clear Creek County? With his incredible history and experience in LE he seems over qualified for the job.”

Harris told The Denver Gazette in a text message that he was getting ready to transition out of the federal system and that this position presented a new challenge for him.

He applied at the last minute, only a day or two before the formal interviews began.

“Knowing the office has some current challenges made the opportunity even more appealing and coming from the outside I think I can leverage my experiences and help make some positive changes.”
