Man sentenced in fatal shooting of his ex, a Cherry Creek Schools teacher

Melissa Wright, a teacher in the Cherry Creek School District, was fatally shot in 2021

The ex of a Cherry Creek school teacher who was killed in Denver more than two years ago was sentenced Friday to 48 years behind bars.

On May 28, 2021, Denver Police responded to a shooting in the area of Pontiac Street and East Lowry Boulevard. That’s where they found Melissa Wright, 41, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Two days later, Eric Cobain was arrested in Lakewood. Family members told 9NEWS that Cobain and Wright had dated for more than a year.

“None of us saw this coming or we would have done something,” Wright’s daughter, Morgan Becwar, said after the shooting.

Wright worked at I-Team Manor in the Cherry Creek School District. It’s an alternative for high school students with special needs.

Cobain was initially charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty in September to second-degree murder. He was sentenced Friday in Denver District Court to 48 years.
