Castle Rock hasn’t been a small, sleepy town for many years, but B&B Café is in a historic building downtown, away from expansive commercial and residential development, making it easy to forget this is now a thriving city.

Yet, B&B is a bustling place most mornings, which makes sense given the homey atmosphere, friendly service and large portions of hearty food.

Breakfast and lunch are served all day, so order a burger, salad or sandwich if that’s what you want at 7:30 a.m. We stuck with traditional morning fare.

The menu features more than bacon and eggs, so making a decision was difficult. After seeing a few of the house-made cinnamon rolls ($6.99) pass our table, we started with one of the massive confectionaries. It’s easily 4 inches tall with cream cheese icing and a dusting of powdered sugar. When cutting into it, buttery, gooey cinnamon oozes from its multiple layers. This could be a meal in itself, but we didn’t stop here. We did, however, bring half home to enjoy the next day.

I was torn between ordering the Patriot Breakfast ($12.99) or the “We call Her ‘Lori” ($12.99). The former incorporates granola and vanilla yogurt sandwiched between two whole pancakes (waffles may be subbed) and topped with bananas, strawberries and blueberries.

Our server said it’s a beautiful-looking dish, but added there were no blueberries available, thus losing an element of the flag’s colors contributing to the entree’s name. Once I learned this and that the granola is not made in-house, I went with the Lori, a variation of quiche Lorraine.

This is impressive plating with a large wedge of quiche, a bowl of fresh fruit and a slice — no, slab is a better description — of house-made banana bread. Caramelized Swiss cheese covered the top of the quiche, hiding the spongy egg mix with plentiful pieces of cubed ham, onions and more cheese. The crust was thin and brittle. This, along with the bread, which was rich with banana but not overly sweet, also fared well as next-day leftovers.

A vegetarian quiche filled with spinach, mushrooms, onions and Colby cheese is also available.

Eggs do comprise much of the breakfast menu, but in more preparations than the above mentioned quiche: sandwiches, burritos, skillets, omelets, Benedicts, scrambles and more. Eggs also find their way to steak, chicken fried steak and a hamburger.

The Ultimate Skillet ($13.99) was ultimately selected. Two eggs rest on a mound of breakfast potatoes and cheese. It comes with a choice of bacon or sausage, corn or flour tortilla and pico de gallo.

Pork green chili is available for an extra $2.99. The heat level isn’t overbearing, so each component of the dish comes through every bite.

Coffee ($4.15) was refilled without asking and my small glass of orange juice ($4.15) was anything but diminutive.

A long counter and several booths greet diners and a second room features a brick wall and tin tile ceiling. Booths are large with high backs, providing a sense of privacy, and may make it easier for conversing. The place gets noisy.
