Denver opens severe weather shelters ahead of weekend temperature drop
Multiple shelters set to open for Friday and Saturday evening
Amongst forecasts of frigid temperatures and potential snow, Denver is opening severe weather shelters for homeless people in the metro area.
The City and County of Denver is activating the Cold Weather Shelter plan on Friday and Saturday evening, according to a press release from the city. This will include two shelters opened by the Department of Housing Stability (HOST) in the city.
HOST will open overnight shelters in the ballroom of New Directions at 4595 Quebec Street and the former Doubletree Hotel at 4040 Quebec Street from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Individuals in need of shelter from the cold weather can report to “front door” shelter access points. These shelters will be increasing their capacity during the two evenings.
These shelters include:
- For individual men – Lawrence Street Community Center at 2222 Lawrence Street.
- For individual women – Samaritan House at 2301 Lawrence Street.
- For youth ages 15-20 – Urban Peak at 2100 Stout Street.
Free buses will transfer people from St. Francis Center at 2323 Curtis Street between 6:30 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights to New Directions and the Doubletree. After 9 p.m., individuals should report directly to the Doubletree, according to the release.
Denver’s forecast calls for temperatures below 20 degrees on Friday and Saturday with a chance of snow Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
