Denver’s iconic Mile High Vienna Stand closes after owner dies
A staple of Denver’s restaurant scene has shuttered following the recent death of its owner.
After 15 years of providing authentic Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches to the Mile High City, Mile High Vienna Stand has closed following the death of owner Sonny Jarock, according to a post on its Facebook page.
“With the passing of Sonny, we want to send our thanks for the 15 years you helped fuel his dream. He loved when he could be there to talk with everyone and share stories, and he truly built a community. He truly loved what he built,” the post, signed by the Jarock family, said.
No further details were shared by the family, but the post led to dozens of current and former customers coming forward with support.
“He was such a sweet, hard working, wonderful owner/operator, just really nice guy,” said one commenter.
Jarock opened the original Mile High Vienna Stand at the intersection of 3rd avenue and Santa Fe Drive in 2008. Per the business’s website, the stand was a childhood dream of Jarock’s, who would spend summers with his father in Chicago’s Elmwood Park, visiting legendary hometown hotdog stands like Gene and Jude’s and Johnnie’s Italian Beef on the way to Chicago Cubs games.
“Sonny was a fun-loving soul. His spirit, though distant in recent years, carried the joy and exuberance that marked his essence. He found solace and happiness in the music of Widespread Panic, a reflection of the passion that colored his life. His love extended beyond melodies; it reached into the hearts of his friends, creating a network of connections that defined him,” James Lucas posted in an obituary.
Prior to its closing, Mile High Vienna Stand was known as one of the best places to get a Chicago hotdog in Denver, with a 4.6 star rating on both Google and Facebook reviews.
