Busy holiday travel helps Colorado Springs Airport set traffic record
Passenger traffic at the Colorado Springs Airport saw a double digit surge in November compared with the year prior, with no signs of slowing during the holiday travel season.
The airport’s six airlines boarded 106,483 passengers last month, lifting November enplanement totals 20% higher than 2022.
For the first 11 months of this year, airport enplanements totaled 1,072,634. That figure already has surpassed last year’s total of 1,071,826, which was a 22-year high in airport traffic and was achieved despite Frontier Airlines ending service in November 2022.
After Frontier’s withdrawal, two new carriers came to the Colorado Springs Airport in 2023 — low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines and Minneapolis/St. Paul-based Sun Country Airlines. Southwest Airlines and other carriers at the airport also added several routes and destinations.
Annual airport data and November metrics indicated travel was up across all Colorado Springs carriers, a sign of sustained demand at the airport, said Greg Phillips, the city’s aviation director.
“We saw an increase of 20% in enplanements for November when compared to 2022 and 49% in comparison to November of 2019,” Phillips said in a news release.
“This can be attributed to not only the uptick in new flights we’ve seen in 2023, but from the support of our community who choose to fly COS.”
During 2023, flights were fuller than most of the year prior, including the month of November when the airport reported an 82.5% load factor as an estimated 41,000 travelers passed through Colorado Springs during the Thanksgiving travel period, the release said.
Passengers planning to head to the Colorado Springs Airport through Jan. 2 for holiday trips can receive 50% off the airport’s $8 daily, long-term parking fee.
