Golden Hour Wine Bar & Social Club opening in LoHi Friday

Amidst the maximalist, chic interior of the newly-opened Golden Hour Wine Bar & Social Club is a method to co-owner Julie Dinsdale’s madness — all aimed at filling a unique void in the Denver bar scene: The lack of gathering places catered specifically to young women.

Julie Dinsdale

Golden Hour Wine Bar & Social Club is co-owner Julie Dinsdale’s first go in ownership, although she has years of hospitality experience abroad and in the U.S.

“We’re such a brewery-heavy town, which is amazing, but with all my friends being in our demographic age range, twenties, thirties, there was really not a place for the girls to sit and have a glass of wine without the game on in the background,” Dinsdale said.

Posh sofas surround ornate coffee tables, and other open seating options, help spur the connections Dinsdale hopes to encourage. Among the busy restaurant culture forming in the neighborhood, Golden Hour aims to be more of a quick gathering place for a glass of wine or two rather than the ultimate destination.

“I think that was another hole in the market. We really just want to be kind of that cozy, a little bit elevated, sophisticated atmosphere for that young couple or group of friends that just wants to stop in and have a few glasses without making a whole night of it,” Dinsdale said.

A lounge area

A lounge area is designed for young crowds to gather and converse at Golden Hour Wine Bar & Social Club.

Bolstering the conversation at Golden Hour is in-house sommelier, Cameron Hogan, who intends to make Golden Hour a wine hub for all levels of interest and talk to patrons about what’s in their bottle.

“A lot of times when people first get into wine it’s daunting and scary… I kind of wanted to show a non-pretentious view on wine that education can be available to everyone. Approachability to me is just well-rounded wine, something that a lot of palates are going to like… For the people who have really delved into wine a little bit more, I have my very unique bottles,” Hogan said.

In-house sommelier, Cameron Hogan, studied wines abroad before accepting the Golden Hour position.

Hogan, a Denver native, traveled across the globe accumulating wine knowledge before working at Barcelona Wine Bar and serving as sommelier and manager of Il Posto prior to Golden Hour.

“He’s taken the wine list and really made it his baby,” Dinsdale said of the wine collection which will be constantly in flux, unlike other wine bars in the area. Hogan describes his list as “approachable and seasonal.”

Hogan also sources from women-owned wineries from his industry connections worldwide. Helping facilitate the open, conversational atmosphere are a variety of shareable bites on the menu, catered daily from Cheese Meat Board, a local charcuterie delivery service. Hogan hopes to expand the menu for more intricate wine pairings in the near future.

Several charcuterie options

The Golden Hour will offer several charcuterie options, which are sourced from local caterer Cheese Meat Board.

A variety of low-proof cocktails, mocktails and non-alcoholic drinks also are provided for younger generations which are increasingly leaving the booze behind.

“Denver is such an active city. There’s a lot of people who, whether it’s by choice or just because they want to have a healthy weekend or whatnot, would still like to come out and spend time with friends,” Dinsdale said.

Also coming to Golden Hour are wine and book clubs, live music acts and more decorations for the already lavish space on the first floor of the Sonder The Artesian hotel. Large bay windows will open on warmer days throughout the year.

While Dinsdale previously worked in hospitality for many years, this is her first bout as an owner. After conquering supply chain slowdowns, Denver’s at-times tricky permitting system and other obstacles, Dinsdale is feeling the excitement.

“I’ve already received so many requests from local women in business in Denver who have monthly events, people who are already interested in the wine club that we’re beginning to create. To have these exciting new ventures and create that community so that this doesn’t just become, you know, a bar — it becomes a place where people gather has been incredible,” Dinsdale said.

It’s perhaps best summarized by Hogan: “Wine and food are the one thing I’ve found on planet Earth that can bring anyone together. No matter if you’re enemies or if you’re from different political sides, if you’re from different religions, you can at least share a glass of wine or some food with someone, and that can honestly bring people together.”

Golden Hour, 3282 Tejon St., is now open for business as of Friday and is open noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, noon to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m. Sundays.

This one’s for the girls—and wine aficionados

A Denver actor is going from brain surgery to Broadway.
