Whiteout daily snow report, Dec. 18

Where has all the powder gone? It certainly was not at Loveland this last weekend nor anywhere in Colorado. But the snow will return, potentially a dusting’s worth for Wednesday, then late-weekend heading into Christmas.

The dry conditions and warm temperatures in Colorado’s mountains continue Monday. A large area of the central US, including Colorado, will not see any precipitation for a couple of days.

Clouds drift in on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the potential for some flurries Wednesday morning in the southern mountains with 0.5-1.5″ of accumulation forecast, but don’t expect a lot with this wave of limited moisture. Most of the moisture will be in California and the west coast.

Wednesday, Dec. 20 forecast model from Monday

A Weather.us forecast model shows the potential accumulation levels of water-equivalent precipitation as of 8 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20 for the United States. Depending on the density of the snow, one inch of water is equivalent to 10 inches of snow based on a common rule of thumb ratio of 10:1.

Thursday’s and Friday’s weather will slide back into sunny skies and warmer temperatures as the winter solstice comes to pass on Thursday.

The Christmas storm will begin arriving on Saturday and last through Monday morning (Christmas Day).

Monday, Dec. 25 forecast model from Monday

A Weather.us forecast model shows the potential accumulation levels of water-equivalent precipitation as of 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 25 for Colorado. Depending on the density of the snow, one inch of water is equivalent to 10 inches of snow based on a common rule of thumb ratio of 10:1.

The European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts’ model from Monday morning shows the potential for accumulations between 0.5-12 inches for most parts of Colorado’s mountains and along the I-25 corridor.

More details will emerge over the next few days and a more detailed forecast of the Christmas storm will become clear.
