New area code announced for some Colorado phone numbers

On December 18, Colorado’s Department of Regulatory Agencies announced the new area code that’s coming to Colorado in 2026 – 748.

The area code will go live in Northern and Western Colorado regions, expected to last for around 38 years. The 970 area code is currently used in these regions, but in the first quarter of 2026, those who request new service, another line, or simply to change their area code may get assigned a ‘748’ number.

As far as Colorado’s area code history goes, 303 was established in 1947, with the 719 area code created in 1988 along with a geographic split. In 1995, the 970 area code was created in the remaining 303 region and in 1998, the 720 area code followed suit.

This means that come 2026, Colorado will be home to six area codes, with 303, 720, and 983 existing in the Denver metro area, 970 and 748 existing in northern and western Colorado, and 719 including the area around Colorado Springs, in the San Luis Valley, and space expanding just outside of the state’s southeast quadrant.

Current phone numbers will be able to keep current area codes when the new area code is added. Three-digit phone numbers, such as 911 and 211, will not be impacted.

I won’t […]
