‘Old-school’ burger joint closes in downtown Colorado Springs

The Green Line Grill, an award-winning burger joint in downtown Colorado Springs for 10 years, shuttered abruptly late last week.

Hand-scribbled notes taped Monday onto the building’s entrances read “Closed” and a Facebook post on Green Line’s page read, “We are closed until future notice. Thank you for your patronage.”

The restaurant’s owner, Bobby Couch, did not respond to The Gazette’s emailed inquiry about the closure and the restaurant’s phone line rang unanswered .

Couch expanded the restaurant with more seating and a liquor license at its 230 1/2 Pueblo Ave., location, he told The Gazette in January 2022 interview— the same month Couch’s daughter, Caitlin Elizabeth Couch, planned to open a cafe at 207 W. Rockrimmon Blvd., The Gazette previously reported.

Caitlin’s cafe, known as The Enchanted Barista, was listed as permanently closed on Google. Its phone line seemed to be disconnected.

The Green Line Grill, described on its Google listing as an “old-school” eatery, sits on a sliver of property surrounded by new development — largely under-construction and recently opened apartment buildings.

Several vehicles drove through the restaurant’s parking lot Monday, including a delivery truck searching for someone to sign for a drop-off at the business as well as a bartender and server from Prime 25, a steakhouse south of downtown, looking to get a bite to eat at the grill.

Known for its burgers, the restaurant served a host of American classics from Coney dogs to macaroni and cheese, a Gazette dining reviewer wrote last year.

An outpouring of heartfelt comments from Facebook users appeared on the business’ post about the closure, from those who said they “love” the restaurant and crave its food.

But some banter among Facebook commenters left more questions than answers.

“Seems like a lot of assumptions are being made,” user MargRita Williams wrote. “If you don’t know the owner, haven’t ever visited the establishment, and are starting rumors please stop.”

Peering in the windows of the business, chairs were neatly stacked and a Coke can sat abandoned underneath the bar counter. A well wisher wrote with a red marker “You will be missed!!!” on the establishment’s closed-door sign.
