Coroner identifies Boulder victim shot and killed by officers Sunday

Jeanette Alatorre, 51, was previously arrested on April 7, 2022 for aggravated robbery with a fake handgun. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years of probation, according to court records. She was shot and killed by Boulder Police officers Sunday after brandishing what appeared to be Beretta handgun, but it was also a replica.

The Boulder County Coroner identified the woman shot and killed by Boulder Police officers on Sunday after allegedly pointing a replica gun at another person and eluding officers.
51-year-old Jeanette Alatorre was shot on Sunday in a residential neighborhood near the North Boulder Recreation center around 4 p.m. Officers initially responded to a report that a woman was pointing a gun at people attempting to drive out of the parking lot, according to a press release by the Boulder Police Department.
Officers responded to the scene within two minutes, Boulder Police Deputy Chief Ron Gosage said at a Monday press conference. Alatorre allegedly didn’t comply with officers’ verbal commands and started walking north on Broadway.
Officers followed her and used “less lethal” attempts to get her to comply for several minutes, according to Gosage. The specific techniques were not identified.
At 4:26 p.m. — about 12 minutes after police arrived — Alatorre allegedly pulled what “appeared” to be a gun from her purse. Two officers shot her.
Both the officers and Boulder Fire Rescue attempted life-saving procedures. She eventually died from her injuries.
Officers discovered later that the gun she appeared to be holding was actually a replica Beretta pistol, which District Attorney Michael Dougherty said does not function like a real gun but looks very similar.
Alatorre was previously arrested and charged with aggravated robbery with the possession of a “real/simulated weapon,” robbery against an at-risk person and motor vehicle theft by the Denver District Attorney’s Office following an incident on April 4, 2022.
The Jeanette Alatorre arrested in the case had a different birthdate than the one shot by Boulder police, but Alatorre had a noted history of using different aliases. Court documents show 17 different names associated with her.
In the 2022 case, she approached a park vehicle in Denver and told the driver she had a gun, demanding the keys. The driver was able to take pictures of Alatorre before she left in the stolen car, according to arrest records.
Officers later identified the vehicle driving near West Mississippi Avenue and South Lipan Street. They pulled the car over and found Alatorre driving. She was taken to the Denver Police headquarters.
During interviews, Alatorre told investigators that she took the vehicle because “six-to-eight” people were trying to kill her because she exposed their existence to the homeless community, according to the arrest affidavit.
Alatorre admitted she used a toy handgun to rob the victim. She stated she keeps the toy gun in her personal car for protection.
She pleaded guilty on March 20, 2023 and received 30 days in jail and three years of probation, according to court records.
The Boulder County Critical Incident Team — a multi-agency team that investigates officer use of force — is currently investigating Sunday’s shooting. The names of the officers involved were not released and they remain on paid administrative leave.
