Nuggets vs. Nets: 3 takeaways from Denver’s 122-117 win in Brooklyn
The Nuggets (20-10) have won two-thirds of their games to start the season and are two-thirds of the way to a perfect road trip.
Here are three takeaways from Denver’s 122-117 win Friday in Brooklyn.
1. A near-perfect night continued Nikola Jokic’s takeover of the Denver Nuggets record books against the Nets. With the last of his 11 rebounds on the night, Jokic replaced Dan Issel at the top of the franchise’s career rebounds list. Midway through his ninth NBA season, Jokic has 6,631 rebounds and counting. He added to his franchise lead in assists with seven and made some ground on the team’s scoring chart with 31 on the night. He did all that while making 12 of his 17 shots, including both of his 3-pointers. He made all five of his free throws and didn’t commit a turnover in 34 minutes of playing time. It’d be easy to take these kind of performances for granted, but the record-breaking nights serve as a pretty regular reminder of his supreme talents.
2. Aaron Gordon picked a good time to have his most efficient shooting game of the season. Denver’s starting power forward made his first five shots, finishing 5 of 6, and made all but one of his season-high nine free throws. No shots were as crucial as his perfect trip to the line that put Denver up five points with four seconds left. Gordon, a 68.2% free-throw shooter for his career, is 25 for 30 in his last seven games. Fouling Gordon when he’s around the rim has been a smart play for opposing teams, but they will have to rethink that if Gordon continues to hit at an 80% rate.
3. Denver’s bench has an opportunity to make up for Friday’s struggles on Saturday in Charlotte. The Nuggets needed their starters to do most of the work on the first night of a back-to-back. All six of the reserves lost their minutes by at least nine points. Nuggets coach Michael Malone went with DeAndre Jordan in the first half but went to Zeke Nnaji as Jokic’s backup in the second. It didn’t seem to matter, as both bench stretches saw the Nuggets lose whatever lead they had built with Jokic on the court. Peyton Watson (9) and Reggie Jackson (8) were the only bench players to score more than two points Friday. If Denver’s bench plays better Saturday against the 7-19 Hornets, the starters should get a little rest before heading home for their Christmas Day game.
NUGGETS 122, NETS 117
What happened: The Nuggets led by as many as 11 in the first quarter, but Brooklyn bounced back to tie the game by the start of the second. The Nets scored the first seven points of the second and held on to a 60-58 lead at halftime. Denver regained the lead on a Jamal Murray jumper in the middle of the third and started the fourth with a two-point advantage. Denver’s second unit lost the lead just before Murray and Nikola Jokic returned for the final seven minutes.
What went right: Jamal Murray came alive in the second half. After scoring six points in the first half, Murray dropped 16 of his game-high 32 points in the third quarter. He added 10 more in the fourth, including seven in the final two minutes. It was the second time in the last few games Murray has taken over for a stretch. He made 4 of 6 from 3-point range and added nine assists, five rebounds and a couple of blocks in his 34 minutes of playing time.
What went wrong: Denver lost track of Brooklyn’s best shooters throughout the night. The Nets finished 13 of 33 from 3. The number of attempts was inflated by a couple of late heaves. Cam Johnson made 3 of his 6 attempts. Dorian Finney-Smith went 4 of 5 off the bench with Spencer Dinwiddie and Royce O’Neale each making a pair.
Highlight of the night: Peyton Watson made his presence known in the final minute. With the Nuggets up 3, Watson grabbed a key defensive rebound. On the other end, Watson caught a pass from Jamal Murray on the left wing. Watson beat Mikal Bridges off the dribble and took off for a two-handed dunk while drawing a foul. Watson missed the free throw and gave up a four-point play on Brooklyn’s next possession, but the dunk provided some breathing room.
Up next: The Nuggets are off to Charlotte for Saturday’s game against the Hornets.
