Police: Wheat Ridge carjacking suspect terrorized, shot multiple victims

By the time the police arrested a 20-year-old man in connection to a suspected “road rage” shooting in Wheat Ridge in November, the suspect’s history of alleged carjacking and armed robbery had stretched over several months, court records show.

Keenan Clodfelter faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of aggravated robbery after Lakewood Police Department caught up with him late last month in connection to a string of crimes that ended with a shooting on Nov. 21 in the area of 44th Avenue and Youngfield Street.

The shooting injured one man.

Clodfelter was also arrested in October in connection to another shooting and carjacking in Thornton, according to authorities.

The string of robberies began on Oct. 4, when two people were carjacked in Thornton in the 9700 block of Welby Road around midnight, according to a previous news release by the Thornton Police Department.

A man called police to report that he had been carjacked by a man with an all-black outfit, black mask and black gun. The suspect told the victim to drop his keys. The victim dropped his keys, ran and called police, according to arrest documents. The suspect then rode off in the Toyota Highlander.

As officers were meeting with the first victim, another victim flagged them down to report that she had been shot in her right forearm. The woman had been outside of her car when a man in all black approached with a gun and also told her to drop her keys. The victim pepper-sprayed the man and left in the vehicle. The man fired three times at her, hitting her in the arm.

Another officer noticed the Highlander and attempted to stop it. The Highlander’s driver attempted to flee, starting a pursuit. It lasted “several minutes” before the Highlander crashed into a parked car, authorities said.

Two men fled from the vehicle. Clodfelter ran from the passenger seat and was eventually arrested nearby. He was wearing all black clothing and white shoes and had a 9mm bullet in his pocket, authorities said.

Jaquise Redd, 18, the driver of the Highlander, was arrested. Authorities said he had a black Springfield XD-9mm handgun, a high-capacity magazine and a 50-round box of ammunition in a bookbag.

Clodfelter had to be tazed before being taken into custody, according to police.

The duo faced charges of aggravated robbery, criminal attempt first degree murder, vehicle eluding and motor theft. But the charges against Keenan were dropped. It’s not immediately clearly what happened to the charges against Redd. The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office told The Denver Gazette that the charges were dropped, pending further investigation. Without court records, it was impossible to determine what Clodfelter’s bond was or when he was released from jail. He was on probation at the time, court records show.

A string of carjacking and robberies

On Nov. 20, a person called the Aurora Police Department to report a carjacking at a car wash at 1540 N. Laredo Street. The victim told police that two men in ski masks approached him as he was cleaning his car and pointed handguns at him. They took his car and left the scene, according to arrest records.

Police later responded to a call of an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven at 13790 E. Quincy Avenue around 4 p.m. that same day. A man held the cashier at gunpoint, stealing $876, authorities said.

A co-worker ran out of the store and took a picture of the getaway vehicle. It was the same vehicle that had been stolen from the carwash, authorities said, adding the employee said she only saw one person in the car.

Lakewood police were then called to Pour Boy Liquors at 6468 W. 20th Avenue around 4 p.m. A man had robbed the store at gunpoint, stealing approximately $500 from the register, according to an arrest affidavit.

Witnesses described the suspect as a thin man in his late 20s who carried a silver, semi-automatic pistol. He was wearing a black hoodie, a black ski mask and red gloves — the same description that the other witnesses gave, according to the documents.

Wheat Ridge Police responded to a shooting call around 4:30 p.m.  in the area of 44th Avenue and Youngfield Street. A man had allegedly fired shots into another man’s car.

The victim was not hit but was injured by the glass shattering into him. He managed to flee the scene and call 911. He was not taken to the hospital, according to the police department.

The suspect fled the scene.

Denver police were called to a reported armed robbery on Nov. 21 around 7 p.m. at the Circle K at 330 S. Kalamath Street. An employee told the police that the man carried a silver gun and wore red gloves. He noted that the suspect had left the store in a Toyota Scion without license plates.

On Nov. 22, at around 2 a.m., a Lakewood officer found a Scion without plates in the parking lot of a Motel 6 at 480 Wadsworth Boulevard.

The officer also found the room the vehicle was connected to — and Clodfelter, who was inside the room, was arrested. Clodfelter claimed that the Scion had not been stolen, arrest records show.

Detectives compared the suspect and his clothes to video footage from the 7-Eleven robbery and Aurora carjacking. The suspect’s body build matched Clodfelter and he was wearing the same shoes that Clodfelter had in the Motel 6 room, according to arrest records.

The Scion had also been reported stolen from Aurora.

Though only 20, Clodfelter’s criminal history stretches well beyond string of incidents this autumn. He has previously been charged with assault, disorderly conduct, felony menacing with a weapon, aggravated motor vehicle theft, aggravated robbery, resisting arrest, eluding and others, records show.

His Colorado driving status has been revoked since Oct. 2021.He has six prior suspensions and four prior convictions.

Following the incidents in November, Clodfelter now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, five counts of aggravated robbery, motor vehicle theft, theft and illegal discharge of a firearm.

A $100,000 cash-only bond was set on Nov. 29.

Multiple investigators theorized that the incidents may lead to a federal investigation. They were not authorized to speak publicly.
