Aurora children can get into recreation centers for free over winter break and have access to structured programming, free hot meals, fun events and sports.
The program is run by We Are Aurora Youth, which was designed to give kids in Aurora fun and safe places to go after school hours when school is on break.
Children ages 13 to 18, who are residents of Aurora, have free access to recreation centers on weekdays until Jan. 5, excluding Jan. 1 due to recreation center closures. Registration at a recreation center front desk is required.
Aurora Public Schools also provides free meals in the lobbies of Central, Moorhead and Southeast recreation centers for kids from about 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Designated program locations for free admission are as follows:
- Central Recreation Center, 18150 E. Vassar Place.
- eSports Lounge/Expo Center, 10955 E. Exposition Ave.
- Moorhead Recreation Center, 2390 Havana St.
- Southeast Recreation Center and Fieldhouse, 25400 E. Alexander Drive.
Recreation centers also have events and staff-guided activities on certain days.
On Wednesday, Dec. 27, Southeast Recreation Center will hold its winter break kick-off event, which will include virtual reality headsets, indoor mini golf, snacks and games from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
From Tuesday through Friday evenings, then again from Jan. 2 to 5, they will have staff-guided activities, including basketball games, volleyball, crafts, snacks and gift card competitions.
More information about hours of operation, requirements and events can be found on the city of Aurora’s website.
