THORNTON, Colo. — An 86-year-old Loveland man who was driving north in the southbound lanes of E-470 near Colorado Boulevard was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon, a spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) tells Denver Gazette news partner 9News.

Three other people were hurt in the crash, which happened around 4:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway and involved four vehicles. The 86-year-old man was traveling north in a Dodge Caravan when the drivers of a Cadillac Escalade and a Chevy Volt swerved to avoid hitting his caravan.

The force of the crash rotated the caravan counterclockwise after the impact with the Volt and came to a brief stop. The Escalade rotated clockwise and onto the left shoulder. The Volt rotated counterclockwise and came to rest on the right shoulder.

The driver of a fourth vehicle, a Honda CRV, swerved to avoid the Volt and Escalade and struck the left side of the Caravan.

No one in the Escalade was injured, according to CSP.  A man and woman in their 70s were in the Volt. Both were taken to the hospital. The woman’s injuries were described as serious, while the man had moderate injuries, CSP said.

The Honda driver, a 27-year-old woman, was seriously hurt.

At this time, excessive speed, drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors in the crash.

CSP originally said two people died but later issued a correction saying one person was killed.
