Denver motorist dies after crashing into tree in University Hills

A Denver motorist died Wednesday after crashing into a tree in the University Hills neighborhood.

Police responded to a crash in the area of East Yale Avenue and South Colorado Boulevard, around two miles from the University of Denver campus, around 9 a.m. on Wednesday. A driver had reportedly crashed into a tree, closing the nearby road and forcing traffic on to alternate routes, according to a social media post by the Denver Police Department.

The driver was pronounced deceased around 9:30 a.m., according to a subsequent post by the department. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Colorado has experienced 544 fatal crashes between Jan. 1 and Dec. 11, 2023, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation — though statistics can lag by a few weeks. There were 754 crash fatalities in 2022, the most the state has seen in 41 years.

The city of Denver made up for 59 of the 544 fatal crashes. There were 68 in the same period last year.
