Young deer rescued after getting stuck in hazardous barrier in Colorado
Colorado Parks and Wildlife shared a wildlife rescue story on Wednesday that highlights the importance of making sure manmade items on a property aren’t posing a risk to animals passing through.
According to CPW, Assistant Area Wildlife Manager Steve McClung saved the life of a young doe that got caught while passing through a gate on Tuesday near Durango. The gate consisted of metal bars that weren’t quite large enough for the animal to fit through with those gaps being about six inches in width.
When the doe was found, she was struggling and exhausted. Ultimately, McClung was able to give her a push and help her reach the other side.
The deer sustained some wounds, but was able to walk away from the incident without the need for rehabilitation.
As noted by CPW, fences that contain gaps where an animal could get stuck and those that may have sharp points on the top can be serious hazards for passing animals. Keep that in mind when adding a fence and if you’ve already got a hazardous fence installed, make sure you’re keeping an eye on animals that may get stuck. Consider replacing pointed tips on the top that may snag an animal attempting to leap over the barrier.
