Denver faces abundance of traffic, closures for New Year’s

Those attempting to head downtown on New Year’s Eve should be wary. A collection of celebrations and events may hold Denver traffic to a standstill.
New Year’s Eve falls on a Sunday this year, landing in line with a few sporting events in the city, helping stick up traffic for the holiday events that will begin in the evening.
In the early afternoon, the Broncos will battle the Los Angeles Chargers — sans Russell Wilson — at Empower Field at Mile High at 2:25 p.m. The game will likely end around 6 p.m., letting out exactly as the Avalanche take on the San Jose Sharks at Ball Arena.
The annual New Year’s Eve fireworks, presented by Downtown Denver Partnership, begins at 9 p.m., with two, 8-minute shows, one at 9 p.m. and the second at midnight.
Xfinity will also be dropping a New Year’s ball at the Mile High Tree in Civic Center Park at 9 p.m.
There are a plethora of other holiday events happening throughout the city on Sunday evening, as well.
Parking in the city will be free during Sunday and Monday.
The Regional Transportation District will not operate the D, H and L light rail lines during two New Year’s Eve fireworks shows in downtown Denver, according to a press release from RTD.
RTD’s Free MallRide shuttle will continue service on 15th and 17th streets during the events. All other bus and rails routes will have zero fares through a partnership with Molson Coors for the 15th year. From 7 p.m., Dec. 31 to 7 a.m., Jan. 1., all RTD rides will be free, promoting safe travel during holiday gatherings.
Holiday closures
Because New Year’s Day falls on a Monday, all government offices and city agencies throughout Colorado will already be closed.
Mail services will also be postponed during the holiday. Some businesses and restaurants may also close on Monday — some may operate with altered schedules. People should check specific business websites before traveling to them.
All 24-hour agencies — like emergency services and the Denver International Airport — will remain fully operational on Monday.
Government and city buildings in Denver, Adams, Jefferson and Douglas counties will be closed on Monday and re-open on Tuesday. Denver libraries will also be closed.
All state parks, county parks, campgrounds and boat ramps will remain open through the holiday. Boulder Reservoir will be closed on Monday, though.
As noted, be sure to check county websites or businesses for specific closure information.
