‘It’s thin, but it’s in”: Iconic Colorado ice park opens for season

Ouray Ice Park has opened its walls for the season, as of the morning of December 29, soon to attract avid ice climbers from around the globe.

Found in a picturesque southwestern Colorado mountain town that’s often referred to as the ‘Switzerland of America‘ thanks to its stunning landscape, Ouray Ice Park is probably the most notable ice park in Colorado, known for hosting the world-renowned Ouray Ice Festival and Competition each year. This year, the festival is set to take place on the weekend of January 18.

The announcement about the seasonal opening of the spot noted that ice conditions are still early-season, reading “it’s thin, but it’s in.” The announcement also noted that a cold spell is set to hit this weekend that will allow for more growth of ice in the narrow canyon where the walls are found.

Water is pumped into the canyon from above, forming world-class ice and mixed-climbing routes. Not all sections of the park are open quite yet, with climbers cautioned that lead-only areas are not maintained and will require cautious reading of ice.

The ice park is open every day of the week and there is no charge for use. Visitors assume the risks of known and unknown hazards in the area. The ice park typically remains open into mid-March. Guided services are available.
