First baby born at Denver Health in 2024 is a boy

New Year Baby Denver 2024

Shortly after midnight, the labor and delivery team at Denver Health welcomed Juan Carlos Felix Nuñez into the world, the hospital said in a news release Monday.

At 12:40 a.m., Felix Nuñez was the first baby to be born at Denver Health in 2024. Through the hospital’s Denver Health Foundation’s Newborns in Need program, Carlos’s family took home a special gift of 2,024 diapers, the hospital said.

Carlos was born healthy to Juan Carlos Felix and Eileen Nuñez Loya, weighing in at 7 pounds and 1 ounce and measuring in at 20 inches long.

“We’re so grateful for the care we received at Denver Health, and the diapers are a wonderful extra surprise,” Nuñez Loya said. “I can’t think of a better way to start the new year.”

Nearly a third of all babies in Denver are born at Denver Health, which means more than 300 babies are born at Denver Health per month. As extra support, the Denver Health Foundation’s Newborns in Need program sends every baby born at Denver Health home with a “Warm Welcome” bag.

These bags include 18 different essential items a new family may need including diapers, wipes, baby lotion, and shampoo. The babies also get a bib, a burp cloth, hats, socks, clothes, a SleepSack, a stuffed animal, educational material and a book.

“Every time a family welcomes a child into the world at Denver Health, we’re happy to celebrate the occasion with the support and resources they need to ensure their child has a healthy start in life with the essentials to grow strong,” said Sharon H. Mushkin, the Newborns in Need program coordinator.
