Broncos’ Justin Simmons, Pat Surtain, Marvin Mims named AFC starters for Pro Bowl Games

Broncos vs. Chargers

ENGLEWOOD – The Broncos won’t be going to the postseason but at least have three players heading to the Pro Bowl Games.

The NFL announced Wednesday that safety Justin Simmons, cornerback Pat Surtain II and rookie wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. will be among AFC starters for the Feb. 4 event in Orlando, Fla.

In addition, guard Quinn Meinerz and fullback Michael Burton were named Pro Bowl alternates.

It is the second career Pro Bowl selection for both Simmons, who is in his eighth NFL season, and Surtain, who is in his third. Simmons first made it in 2020 and Surtain last season.

Mims was a second-round pick last April out of Oklahoma. He is averaging 17.4 yards on punt returns and 26.3 on kickoff returns.

Mims sat out last Sunday’s 16-9 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the home finale due to a hamstring injury. He was limited in practice Wednesday.

Players are chosen for the Pro Bowl games based on voting from fans, players and coaches. Voting from each group counts as one-third of the final total.

“I always think as a coach, it’s exciting,’’ Payton said after Wednesday’s practice at the Centura Health Training Center and before the Pro Bowl teams were announced about having players on his team be selected.

‘Frustrating’ for Bolles

With Jarrett Stidham taking over as the starting quarterback for Russell Wilson, left tackle Garett Bolles expressed his frustration at having now blocked for 13 quarterbacks since joining the Broncos in 2017.

“My job is just to block for the quarterback,’’ he said. “I protect them on the field, I protect them off the field. That’s what the Broncos pay me to do. It’s frustrating for me since I’ve been here for so long, just the same crap over and over again. But at the same time, I got to go out there and do my job and that’s what I’m going to continue to do.”

Bolles had initially declined to talk about Wilson’s benching when Payton made the move Dec. 27.

“It’s a tough situation, that things happen around here,’’ Bolles said. “It’s frustrating for me, especially. But at the same time, that’s who (Payton) wanted, and I’ve got to do my job.”

Bolles was asked to name the 13 Denver quarterbacks he has blocked for and he did so with just a tiny bit of help.

McGlinchey doesn’t practice

Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey didn’t practice Wednesday due to a rib injury and Payton declined to divulge any information on his status.

“No update with him,’’ Payton said.

McGlinchey was lost for the game in the first quarter against the Chargers. If he is unavailable for the season finale Sunday at Las Vegas, veteran Cam Fleming is expected to start.

Also not practicing were running back Samaje Perine (rest), tight end Chris Manhertz (illness) and safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (knee). Payton said Turner-Yell, who suffered a torn left ACL against the Chargers, will be placed Thursday on injured reserve.

Sutton, Browning back

Wide receiver Courtland Sutton and outside linebacker Baron Browning both returned to practice on a limited basis after sitting out against the Chargers with concussions. Both players were injured in a 26-23 loss to New England on Dec. 24 and both wore non-contact blue jerseys during Wednesday’s workout.

“It’s pretty normal,’’ Payton said. “Any time a player is in the (concussion) protocol, we’ll put them in the navy or a color different than we’re going to be wearing, just as a heads up.”

Also limited Wednesday was linebacker Josey Jewell due to a back injury.

Dulcich officially done

Tight end Greg Dulcich’s season is officially over due to hamstring and foot injuries with the Broncos not activating him Wednesday when his 21-day window expired after he was designated to return from injured reserve on Dec. 13.

The Broncos did not consider this week activating Dulcich, who returned to practice Dec. 13 from a hamstring injury but then didn’t practice after that due to hurting his foot. He will end up missing 15 of the 17 games this season and will have missed 22 of 34 games in his first two years.

Burton’s blocking

Payton lauded the blocking Burton did on Stidham’s 54-yard touchdown pass to  Lil’Jordan Humphrey against the Chargers. The receiver utilized the blocking of the fullback while weaving his way for the score after catching the ball at the Chargers 40.

“(Humphrey) has to bounce off about five people for the fullback to get ahead of him, but I’d never seen something like that,’’ Payton said of Burton making his way downfield to block. “It was a special play.”

Payton said he didn’t initially see Burton’s blocking until reviewing the film and he showed the clip to the team. Stidham called it an “incredible play” and said Burton regularly runs “80 yards down the field just about every play” in practices.

Briefly

The Broncos earlier this season stopped a 16-game losing streak to Kansas City and now want to end a seven-game skid to the Raiders. “That’d be huge,’’ said tackle Quinn Bailey. “That’s very important. Take care of two in one season.’’ … While the Broncos (8-8) are out of the playoff race, Payton wants to finish with a winning record and said he will play Sunday “just like I would a regular game.”
