Rockies sign former St. Louis top prospect, catching depth to one-year deals
The Rockies agreed to one-year deals with former Cardinals top prospect Dakota Hudson and catcher Jacob Stallings Friday, adding depth to the pitching and catching portions of Colorado’s roster.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Rockies placed former backup catcher Brian Serven on waivers where he was claimed by Chicago. They also outrighted infielder Alan Trejo to Triple-A Albuquerque.
The two deals are the first free agent signings of the offseason for Colorado as it continues to await a new TV deal, and the financial ramifications that may come with a potential deal.
Hudson, a 29-year-old right-handed pitcher, was ranked St. Louis’ No. 3 prospect in 2019 and brings six years of experience from the Cardinals. He started 79 games after debuting in 2018 and appeared in 114 overall. He carried a 3.84 earned run average across 470 ⅔ innings.
FanGraphs grades his fastball as a plus pitch, and he carries a sinker too that aided him to a 51.5-percent ground ball rate last season and has kept him at that mark or higher in each of his six seasons. For Coors Field, the Rockies are hoping he does the same, and brings a different element to the rotation, or as a long relief arm. They also added starter Cal Quantrill in a November trade with the Cleveland Guardians.
Like Rockies’ current starting catcher Elias Díaz, Stallings is a former Pittsburgh starter before his last two years in Miami. He spent six seasons with the Pirates, and in his eight total campaigns he has hit .235. For Colorado, his value likely comes as a backup to Díaz, and with his 21.8 career strikeout percentage. He also brings a Gold Glove from 2021 after going the full season without allowing a passed ball.
He also gained notoriety last year on the mound after striking out now-Most-Valuable-Player Ronald Acuña Jr. in May.
Each player serves as depth the Rockies needed after losing Austin Wynns and Chris Flexen to recent free agent deals with other teams.
