Search for possible victims underway following in-bounds avalanche at California resort
In a 10:55 a.m. update posted to Instagram on Wednesday morning, Palisades Tahoe confirmed that an in-bounds avalanche took place at the ski resort at about 9:30 a.m.
The avalanche occurred on the Palisades side of the destination, above the GS gully area of KT-22. KT-22 terrain opened for the season this morning.
At last report, ski patrol and the mountain operations teams were performing a search of the slide debris for potential skiers and snowboarders who may have been buried.
In a report from Powder, it was noted that Palisades Tahoe was unable to confirm whether or not any skiers or snowboarders may have been caught in the slide.
UPDATE: A 2:10 p.m. update from Outside Magazine confirmed that people were buried, with most able to dig themselves out. There’s also a report of at least one injury and one possible death. The official search has concluded with everyone accounted for.
Both sides of the mountain are set to remain closed for the remainder of the day.
According to the Palisades Tahoe website, the resort has gotten 21 inches of new snow in the last seven days, with three new inches of snow in the last 24 hours.
Palisades Tahoe, formerly called Squaw Valley, is located on the northwest side of Lake Tahoe in northern California.
