Denver is forecast for chilly temps Friday and subzero wind chill values, with an even colder weekend ahead, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Expect mostly sunny skies and a high of 36 degrees. Windy conditions are anticipated to range between 10 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching upwards of 38 mph. Wind chill will bring the temps down as low as -2 degrees.

There’s a 70% chance of snow overnight, mainly after 10 p.m. Expect mostly cloudy conditions and a low bottoming out at -5 degrees. Wind chill values could be temps as low as -18 degrees.

The weekend is expected to bring temps in the single digits, accompanied by blustery and brisk conditions brought by the polar vortex. Temps will remain brutally cold through Monday before beginning to warm up on Tuesday.

In 1998: Very strong winds and heavy snow caused blizzard conditions in the mountains to spread over portions of the Front Range foothills. Just east of the Continental Divide, sustained winds from 80 to 85 mph with gusts to 100 mph were recorded at Silver Spruce Ranch near Ward, resulting in whiteout conditions. Only a trace of snow fell at the site of the former Stapleton International Airport. North winds gusted to only 28 mph at Denver International Airport.
