Coroner identifies Colorado man who died while skydiving

36-year-old Gregory Coates was wearing a wingsuit when he died in Longmont, officials said

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a 36-year-old man died while skydiving Saturday in Longmont.

The Boulder County Coroner on Monday identified the man as Gregory Coates. Longmont Public Safety said Coates was a resident of a mountain community near Denver.

The incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. when Coates made a jump while wearing a wingsuit, according to Longmont Public Safety. He was found near Nelson Road and Grandview Meadows Drive, the coroner said.

Longmont Police and Longmont Fire responded to the scene.

Police told our partners 9NEWS it does not appear Coates’ primary or reserve parachutes deployed before he hit the ground.

Coates was participating with Mile-Hi Skydiving at the time of his death on a flight out of the Longmont airport, officials said.

An unidentified representative from Mile-Hi Skydiving declined to comment on Coates’ death when reached by phone and said the company did not have a communications manager to respond to questions.

It was the sixth skydiving death in the last six years for Mile-Hi Skydiving, according to 9NEWS.

The FAA did not immediately respond to an email seeking additional information about the investigation into Coates’ death.
