Fort Collins police find 2 dead after call of possible hostage situation

Two people were found dead Monday in Fort Collins after an informant told police they believed a woman was being held against her will by her husband.

Fort Collins police responded to a home in the 2900 block of Middlesborough Court around 4:15 p.m., and a SWAT team and negotiators were called in just before 5:30 p.m. in case it was a hostage situation.

Police surrounded the home and tried to make contact with the people inside but didn’t get any response and didn’t hear any signs of distress.

Authorities said they didn’t have “legal exigency” to enter the home and Fort Collins police detectives began working on drafting a search warrant.

While they waited on the search warrant, police and Poudre Fire Authority made preparations to enter the home, and made sure neighbors were safe.

A Fort Collins Police spokesman told The Denver Gazette that a judge signed the search warrant at 7:14 p.m. and the SWAT team entered the home 10 minutes later.

That’s when the SWAT team found two adults dead and a firearm nearby. Police are investigating the incident as a possible murder-suicide.

“This is an incredibly sad case for all involved, and certainly not the outcome anyone was hoping for,” Fort Collins Deputy Chief Greg Yeager said in a news release. “Our officers and detectives will work diligently to process the scene and seek answers for everyone.”

The Larimer County Coroner will release the identities and cause and manner of their deaths once next of kin have been notified.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Fort Collins police detective Kristie Allen at 970-416-2385.
