Steamboat’s Tyler Johnson continues his Grammys roll
Steamboat Springs-born Tyler Johnson continued his ascendance as one of the nation’s top music producers Sunday when he won his second straight Grammy Award.
Last year he won Album of the Year for helming Harry Styles’ enormous hit, “Harry’s House.” This year he won Record of the Year for his work on Miley Cyrus’ hit song “Flowers.”
Johnson now has five Grammy Award nominations and two wins dating to 2014.
Johnson joined Cyrus on the Crypto.com Arena stage, where she took a moment to thank Johnson and fellow producer Thomas Edward Percy Hull (aka Kid Harpoon), among others.
Tyler Johnson of Steamboat Springs won his second straight Grammy Award on Sunday.
It was a typically surreal Grammy moment. The award was presented and announced by film legend Meryl Streep and her big-time British son-in-law and record producer, Mark Ronson.
Johnson (and OK, Cyrus, too) were just about the only things that could slow the roll that Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish have been on. “Flowers” set a Spotify record by hitting 1 billion streams faster than any other song on the platform. This was Cyrus’ first Grammy award.
Side note: “Record of the Year” honors the overall production of one song recording and goes to the artist and producers who made it. “Song of the Year” is purely a songwriting award.
Cyrus elaborated her thanks on Instagram, thanking “every single person who made this song and album possible,” including “my lover, my momos, my friends, my collaborators” – again specifically mentioning Johnson.
“I celebrate my fans above all else. No award means as much to me as the years we’ve spent together. You SAW me before this recognition. I never needed it because I HAVE YOU.”
Johnson has now worked with Swift, Pink, Ed Sheeran, One Republic, Keith Urban, John Legend, Sam Smith and Meghan Trainor, among many others. He was named the world’s top music producer in 2022 by Jaxsta for the entirety of his work on Styles’ record-breaking album. His current and recent projects include albums for Leon Bridges and the country artist Cam (“The Otherside.”)
Johnson is a 2004 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School. After winning the 2023 Grammy, he told the hometown Steamboat Pilot that finally reaching that peak while looking back at growing up in Steamboat Springs made the moment even more surreal.
“For me, I am going back to the goal drawing board,” Johnson told the Pilot. “Maybe it’ll be more about finding life balance and starting a family.”
