Officers shot an armed man who was threatening a woman with two children near the Colorado State University campus Wednesday afternoon, according to police.
Fort Collins Police Services said at around 1:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to a call about a man who had dropped a handgun near the intersection of West Elizabeth Street and South Shields Street.
It was reported that the man picked the gun back up and kept walking, police said. When officers got there, they found the man still armed with the gun and “behaving in a threatening manner” toward a woman who was pushing two small children in a stroller near the intersection of Springfield Drive and Southridge Drive, according to police. That’s just west of the CSU campus.
The police department said the man knew the woman and children.
Officers recognized the man as a wanted suspect with a felony warrant, police said.
Police said officers commanded the man to drop the gun but he refused to comply, and one officer fired, striking him. The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The 8th Judicial District Critical Incident Response team will be investigating the shooting.
