7 great places to go fat biking in Colorado

The winter snow doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying biking. Fat biking is an increasingly popular winter sport and a unique way to enjoy the snow if you’re not into skiing or snowboarding. Fat bikes accommodate very wide tires, at least 3.8 inches in width, which allows riders to bike on snow and sand.

Here are seven great opportunities to fat bike in Colorado.

1. Front Range Guides

Front Range Guides offers half and full-day custom tours in Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins. The tours consist of a ‘cycling ambassador,’ rentals, transportation, lunch/trail snacks, and a video of your tour.

2. Beer & Bike Tours

This company will take you on fat bike adventures through the snow-packed trails or singletrack at Lory State Park, near Fort Collins, and other nearby areas. Beer & Bike Tours limits their excursions to six to 12 people and works with local suppliers to supply customers with bikes. And you can look forward to enjoying some local craft brew after your ride.

3. Ignite Adaptive Sports

Ignite Adaptive Sports offers adaptive fat bike lessons near Eldora Mountain. The company is located in Nederland.

4. Gold Run Nordic Center

The Gold Run Nordic Center offers day and full-moon tours on their trails. Participants must have a daily trail pass or an unlimited trail pass to access the trails. All snowshoe trails are open to fat bikes. You can also rent Borealis Crestone bikes for $20 per hour.

5. Ridden Breckenridge

Ridden offers daily fat bike excursions to Broken Compass Brewery and Breckenridge Distillery. You’ll ride through the picturesque town on a Borealis fat bike and learn some Breckenridge history. You’ll also get to ride along the scenic Blue River Rec Path. Ridden’s tours are offered at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

6. Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa

This resort offers group and private guided tours, as well as rentals. Rentals are only available to lodging guests. Fat biking provides a great opportunity to experience Devil’s Thumb Ranch’s Nordic trail system and is available approximately from mid-November to early April.

7. Vail Nordic Center

The snow transforms the Vail Golf Club into the Vail Nordic Center, which offers many fat bike trails as well as on-site rentals. The area includes about eight miles of groomed fat biking trails.
