What’s wrong with the Colorado Avalanche? Go inside the numbers.

Avs host Sunday matinee against Arizona Coyotes at Ball Arena

What’s wrong with the Colorado Avalanche?

They return home Sunday for an afternoon puck drop against the Coyotes at Ball Arena. The ailing Avs have lost five of six games (1-4-1) since the NHL All-Star break; collecting three of a possible 12 points on their long road swing.

Go inside the numbers to understand why the Avalanche are struggling.

2 — Goals generated by centers

Colorado isn’t getting enough production up the middle and Nathan MacKinnon can’t do it alone. He got unusually quiet over this road swing (1 goal, 4 assists). The only remaining center with an Avalanche goal over that span was Ross Colton; who scored Tuesday night in their win over the Capitals.

25 — Opponent goals scored

The Avs are struggling to protect their own net. They fell 5-3 in New Jersey, 5-2 in Carolina, and 4-0 in Florida. Many of those opposing goals resulted from sloppy puck management or turnovers in their defensive zone. The Avs aren’t generating enough offense to keep pace.

.895 — Alexandar Georgiev’s save percentage

Georgiev is not the main reason the Avs are losing games. But he’s not stealing any victories right now. You can’t blame it on overuse, either, with backup goalie Justus Annunen starting twice over the trip. Georgiev is a first-time All-Star with still more to prove before the playoffs begin.

12:33 — Ryan Johansen’s average ice time

It’s clear Johansen is not the answer at second-line center. He started the trip at 2C with hopes that improved linemates would boost his performance. Nope. Johansen compiled one assist and ended the road swing centering the fourth line. Will the Avs move him before the trade deadline?

17 — Failed power-play chances

The Avalanche power play went 0-for-13 over their first four games out of the All-Star break. They finally broke through in Washington (1-3) and Tampa Bay (1-3). But those goals from Mikko Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen were a small reprieve from otherwise lacking Avs special teams.
