Body found near Colorado trailhead in same general area where woman went missing
An investigation is underway after a sheep herder discovered the body of a woman near a trailhead in Colorado’s Delta County.
Deputies with the Delta County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the discovery near Smith Mountain Trailhead at about 4 p.m. on February 18. The body was found in a remote area, roughly 300 yards from H-75 Road. The body appeared to be an adult female at the time of discovery.
An autopsy is being conducted to determine the identity of the individual and in order to determine a potential cause of death.
Authorities have not published any information related to a potential link between this discovery and the local missing persons case involving 40-year-old Samantha Bartolo, who was last seen on November 10 walking away from a camper trailer in the area of H-75 Road.
No further details related to the discovery have been made available at this time. The initial press release about the discovery did not note whether or not foul play was suspected, nor whether or not there’s any ongoing risk to the public.
Authorities noted that the trailhead near where the body was found is located east of Delta, which is a city of about 9,000 residents in southwest Colorado. It’s located about 35 miles southeast of Grand Junction and about 20 miles northwest of Montrose.
