World-renowned Colorado ski spot to close some lifts on weekdays due to lack of crowds
According to a report from Aspen Times, Aspen Skiing Company has made the decision to close “redundant lifts” most weekdays due to a dip in skier traffic.
All terrain remains accessible, with the lifts that are set to be closed on some days offering access to terrain that can be reached via other routes. Closures include various lifts on Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, and Highlands.
Details have not been released regarding how long the closures will be in place.
While the four mountains managed by Aspen Skiing Company in the Aspen area are some of the best-known Colorado ski areas worldwide, the area is also know as an expensive place to visit, with single-day lift tickets costing $239. It’s also worth noting that these Aspen ski areas aren’t on the popular Epic Pass, with only up to seven days at Aspen Snowmass included on some Ikon Pass products.
Some of those in the Colorado skiing community have blamed conglomerate passes of this nature for crowded slopes in recent years. That being said, it’s reasonable to consider whether or not Aspen’s general lack of involvement with these passes could be contributing to smaller weekday crowds. Granted, many Centennial State slopegoers may view the lack of crowding as a good thing – in other words, if you want fewer people on the slopes, it sounds like weekdays in Aspen may be a good bet.
It’s also worth noting that the decision to turn off certain lifts when not needed will mean conserving energy.
As of the most recent report, 5,563 of 5,648 acres (98.5 percent) across Aspen Skiing Company’s four mountains are open. Snowfall in the Colorado Headwaters River Basin, which is where Aspen is found, is at 98 percent of the long-term norm for this time of the year, per February 21 reporting from the USDA.
