Dish announces third round of layoffs in 2024

Dish Network CEO and founder Charles Ergen

Dish Network will sever more than 50 employees in the next two months, the company announced this week.

It’s the third round of layoffs in 2024 for the Centennial-based company.

Dish announced the upcoming layoffs in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) listing on Tuesday, claiming that layoffs will include employees at the company’s main headquarters at 9601 S. Meridian Blvd. in Englewood and 5701 S. Santa Fe Drive in Littleton.

The 53 employees terminated come from direct sales executives (25), account executives (12) and some managers and scientists.

That’s on top of the 157 employees laid off since Jan. 10, with another nine announced later that month. Those came only days after the company officially merged with satellite and internet communications company EchoStar.

“After a thorough review of our operations and consideration of a changing business environment, we made the difficult decision to remove 53 positions in our company,” said Ted Wietecha, company spokesperson, in an emailed statement. “Today’s decision reflects our focus on improving company performance in an evolving marketplace, and we will continue to make strategic hires and investments to support our growth.”

Dish has about 5,500 team members in Colorado.

WARN is a law that requires that companies give employees a 60-day notice before official layoffs. The notice is then sent to the state’s Department of Labor and Employment. Because the Dish Network layoffs were officially announced on Wednesday, workers affected will continue working at the company until an official separation on April 20.

The affected employees are not represented by any union, according to the WARN notification Dish sent to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Almost 500 local employees were laid off earlier in January, according to a previous WARN listing in November.

Dish Network reported $3.7 billion in revenue for the third quarter of 2023. It made $4.1 billion in the same quarter last year.

The merger between DISH Network Corp. and EchoStar Corp. became official Dec. 31.

The merger brings together Dish’s “satellite technology, streaming services and nationwide 5G network with EchoStar’s premier satellite communications solutions,” according to a Jan. 3 news release.

“We have brought together two trailblazing companies with complementary portfolios to create a global connectivity leader with premier wireless, satellite, and video distribution capabilities,” Charles Ergen, executive chairman of the board of EchoStar, said in the release.

The headquarters will remain in Englewood, where it has been located for more than 40 years.
