Mayor Mike Johnston on Thursday announced a new Community Planning and Development department director, leaving only one more leadership position left to occupy in his new administration.
Johnston nominated Manish Kumar to become the planning department’s next director, pending Denver City Council approval.
He will captain city growth by collaborating with residents and local businesses. The Community Planning and Development department oversees zoning codes, contractor licensing, building permits and city planning.
Kumar previously served as a U.S. diplomat who managed $6.5 billion projects in Haiti, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Columbia.
His experience in Denver includes working on the Regional Transportation District’s $5.4 billion public-private-partnership FastTracks initiative, as well as serving the Colorado Department of Transportation and a private construction company.
“As a Denver local and veteran community planning expert with uniquely diverse experience, Manish understands what it takes to provide great customer service and deliver world-class projects for our city,” Johnston said in a statement.
Johnston’s goal for the department is to reduce building permit review times by 30% in 2024.
Kumar begins his new position in April.
Only the Denver Department of Public Health and Safety director role remains vacant, which will soon be announced, according the mayor’s office on Thursday.
