126 inches of snow falls over four days at California resort
Colorado’s roadtripping powderhounds may want to set their sights on California following huge triple-digit snow totals that have dropped in the state over recent days.
On March 4, the National Weather Service released four-day totals from a recent storm that blasted the Sierra Nevadas, including the Lake Tahoe area.
The resort that got the most snow was Sugar Bowl, located about eight miles west of Truckee and in the area of the infamous ‘Donner Pass’ incident of 1846 to 1847. Sugar Bowl got a stunning 126 inches of snow in recent days – 10.5 feet.
As might be expected, footage from the scene is shocking, showing snow stacked high enough to cover door frames.
Sure to delight locals, some parts of the resort remain open despite the massive amount of snow that fell and the complications that this much snow can pose.
In a March 4 update on the resort website, it’s noted that while the resort is open, there’s a chain requirement on US Highway 40 from Soda Springs to Sugar Bowl and a closure in place from Truckee to Sugar Bowl.
Elsewhere, much of the Tahoe Region got at least five feet.
