DUI enforcement surge planned for Summit, Clear Creek counties

Thirty-three fatal crashes and 180 crashes with serious injuries in the last five years along the I-70 corridor through Summit and Clear Creek counties has led to the Colorado State Patrol conducting saturation patrols on Saturday.

According to a news release, the operation will include the I-70 corridor and major roads in the area. Most of the crashes happened late at night on Fridays and Saturdays.

The operation will focus on all dangerous driving behaviors, including any impaired driving. Troopers will address any dangerous driving behavior observed or reported.

“State troopers will be dedicated to the detection and apprehension of drivers who may be impaired by or otherwise under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of these substances,” said the release. “We will also be increasing enforcement on excessive speed and a lower tolerance on those driving “over the limit;” both regarding alcohol and speed.”

CSP recommends that if you encounter a suspected impaired driver, get out of the way, protect yourself and contact CSP when it is safe to do so. The agency recommends you pull over and stop and then dial *CSP (*277), 719-544-2424  or 303-239-4501. 911 is always an option.

“Be prepared to provide the following information: vehicle description, license plate number, location and direction of travel, driver description, and the driving behavior being demonstrated,” said the release.
