Mountain West considers changing location of conference basketball tournament
LAS VEGAS • The Mountain West is exploring alternate locations for its conference basketball tournament, perhaps looking to take advantage of the void in Las Vegas created by the dissolution of the Pac-12.
The Colorado Springs-based Mountain West is committed to playing at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV through the 2025 event, but it has no agreement in place beyond that.
This is the final year of the Pac-12, which has played its annual tournament in Las Vegas since 2013, so its home at the T-Mobile Arena figures to be available.
“Really, we’re doing what the membership has asked, which is to explore the options in Las Vegas,” said Javan Hedlund, the Mountain West senior associate commissioner for external communications strategy.
A move would require a majority vote from the conference’s 11 basketball-playing institutions.
Coaches have long expressed a desire to play somewhere other than the home arena of the Runnin’ Rebels, who are 27-17 all-time in the event with eight championship game appearances. Only San Diego State (34 wins and 15 finals appearances) has had more success than UNLV in the event.
The Mountain West has held its tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center since 2007. The venue also hosted the first four Mountain West Tournaments from 2000-03.
Denver’s Ball Arena, then known as the Pepsi Center, hosted three times from 2004-2006.
T-Mobile Arena, the $375 million venue opened in 2016 that serves as home to the NHL’s Golden Knights, would represent a facilities upgrade from the 41-year-old Thomas & Mack and bring the possibility of walk-up crowds from the Las Vegas Strip.
Hedlund said Mountain West commissioner Gloria Nevarez and her team are looking at all options, which includes potentially working with Las Vegas from a marketing perspective to expand the league’s footprint in the city.
“They’re exploring the opportunities,” Hedlund said, covering a sweeping array of areas and possibilities. “It could be staying at the Thomas & Mack. It could be going to another arena in Las Vegas. It could be exploring outside of Las Vegas. I think the membership would like us to stay, and I know Gloria would like us to stay in Las Vegas – it’s a great city for this championship – but I think right now it’s just exploring what the possibilities are for the membership.”
