The Denver Police Department released updated information and released security camera footage Wednesday of an incident in which multiple officers shot a man who was allegedly robbing a convenience store.
Officers responded to a report of a potential stabbing and robbery at the 7-Eleven at West 5th Avenue and Federal Boulevard at around 6:50 p.m. on March 1, according to a previous press conference by the Denver Police Department.
Upon entering the store, officers heard what appeared to be a struggle behind the back office door. When officers opened the door, three men were in the office with a desk moved as a barricade, according to surveillance footage released by the department.
One of the men, later identified as 43-year-old Christopher Cauch, grabbed a sharp instrument and held it to the neck of one of the other men, claiming that he would stab him if the police entered.
As police entered with guns drawn, Cauch began to scream something indiscernible sitting into the office chair with the object still held to the man’s neck.
Police then fired more than 20 shots at Cauch, killing him. The hostage was able to get away and was not injured by the gunfire.
The police department, Denver District Attorney’s Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Colorado State Patrol are investigating the shooting.
